Life in Spain: At Home on our Olive Farm
Regenerating 18 acres of 200+ year old olive trees for premium single-estate, single-origin, early-harvest hojiblanca olive oil
while living in and restoring an old off-grid Spanish Cortijo.
How it started:
In early 2024, I found a home online while unseriously browsing bargain properties abroad as a distraction. The place caught me by surprise, got me in the guts, with its sprawl of olive trees, face with a view, old beams, romantic arches, decorative tile, limewashed walls... I couldn’t shake the thought of the cortijo for days— even though I truly wasn’t really considering a purchase or a move. Buying a home in Spain would be crazy, I’d think to myself, while attempting to pull out of my daydream scheme.
I decided to share the home listing with Gordon, thinking he’d set me right. But then, the propery got to him too. So much so, that, the very next day we boarded a flight and went to put in an offer, still not sure how we’d figure any of it out.
It was the lower cost of living. The highly-rated healthcare. The slow pace of life that celebrates both rest and quality food. It was the warmth. It was the sun, the noonday sun. The fresh start. The proximity and possibility. The olive branches. The forgiveness. And, the Nomad Visa’s that would allow us to stay and work abroad…
Ten months, a whole lot of feeling, and several visits later…. After a long, very personal, day spent with the entire family selling the property, going over all the estates details, reminiscing their memories at home with their grandparents, hugging one another and sharing in the tears and the joy of transition— we took the risk of our lifetime and bought a home on a “luck of olive grove land” in Southern Spain. I’m still completely speechless and so totally grateful.
Step 1: Tend The Trees
OUR VERY OWN 18 ACRES OF HERITAGE 200+ YEAR OLD OLVIE TREES ARE THE HEART OF THIS PROJECT
We are dedicated to producing a premium single-estate single-variety early harvest hojiblanca olive oil. We are focused on organic, traditional growing methods paired with the state of the art olive milling technologies. Our oil isn’t just a product, its the the essence of this land known for supplying the world with the best olive oil since before the Roman Empire.
Step 2: Restore the Cortijo
PRESERVING HISTORY: BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO AN OLD SPANISH FARMHOUSE
Our approach to restoring the cortijo is one of deep respect and considered design. We will retain the traditional Andalusian character— the thick lime-washed walls, hydraulic tile floors, and the central courtyard— adding personal gestures by way of styling and furnishing.
Most updates will be structural, of repair, or in the nature of undoing some of the newer updates, bringing the traditional space back to life while injecting a taste of modernity.
